The Entrance: Your Home’s (and Life’s) Business Card

In Feng Shui, the entrance is much more than just a passageway. It is the mouth of Chi, the point where vital energy enters the house – and, symbolically, our lives. This is where we receive people, opportunities, ideas and changes. The way this space is organised directly influences our willingness to give and receive, communicate, start projects and relate to others.

A clear, welcoming and well-kept entrance is an invitation to good energy. A disorganised or obstructed entrance, on the other hand, can cause blockages and negatively affect the flow of Chi throughout the house.

How to create an entrance with good Feng Shui:

  • Keep the entrance door clean, functional and well maintained. Doors that are difficult to open, with peeling paint or misaligned numbers block the flow of energy.
  • Use a mat at the outside entrance, changing it regularly.
  • The entrance should be clear and well lit, with natural plants, soft scents and decoration that conveys joy and welcome.
  • Create a visual separation from the rest of the house. If there is no defined hallway, use a round rug, a screen or even separate flooring to mark the boundary between outside and inside.
  • Avoid mirrors directly in front of the door. They reflect the incoming energy, pushing it back out. A side mirror can be beneficial if it reflects a positive image.
  • Avoid excess objects and using the hall as a storage area. Have a functional space (such as a coat rack, shoe rack or sideboard) to put coats, rucksacks or keys – freeing yourself from the energy coming in from the street.
  • Pay attention to symbolism. A beautiful painting, an inspiring image or a photograph of the residents transmits a welcoming and personalised energy.
  • Soft, balanced lighting from below helps to create a calm and harmonious atmosphere.

In addition, the location of the entrance door (in the centre, to the left or to the right of the façade) influences the Yin/Yang energy balance of the house – something to consider if you’re looking for more harmony between feminine and masculine energies.

The entrance is, above all, the starting point. It represents our ability to start something new, to show ourselves to the world and let it in. Taking care of this space is taking care of ourselves.

If you feel that your home no longer reflects who you are, perhaps it’s time to give it back its soul. Book a Feng Shui consultation with me and allow yourself to co-create a space that welcomes, balances and inspires – starting, with intention, at the entrance.
